Jonah is shown in contempt and disbelief of God's request. He is turned away from God and is looking down in disobedience. God's light still shines on Jonah, and Jonah is still symbolically at the right hand of God.

Jonah is located at the base of the stairs, his journey has barely begun. His will, his decisions, his control of his life will lead him into the belly of the fish.

Superimposed into the stairs below Jonah is the whale; mouth opened wide and ready to consume the prophet. Jonah is holding the word of God, which digitally is a picture of the ancient text.

If Jonah turns to God and repents, asks for forgiveness, and obeys God's commands his ascension to heaven is certain. Only Jonah is going to prevent Jonah from Gods grace and pursuit.
